Following our post on Oct. 17 regarding a found dog on Old Andover Road, the North Reading Police Department received information indicating that the dog—now identified as an approximately one-year-old German Shepherd mix—had been willfully abandoned by its caretakers.
As a result of the subsequent NRPD investigation, two individuals will be summonsed to District Court on animal cruelty charges related to the abandonment.
We have learned that the dog’s name is Sonny, and that he has unfortunately been abandoned multiple times during his first year of life. NRPD and North Reading Animal Control have been working closely with animal rescue partners to help secure Sonny a safe and permanent home. Skilled trainers have been making significant progress with him, as he had previously been living in abusive conditions.
The North Reading Police Department remains committed to thoroughly investigating and taking appropriate action in all suspected cases of animal cruelty.
