Drone Division

The North Reading Police Department operates a dedicated Unmanned Aircraft System (Drone) Program designed to enhance public safety within the community. The team currently consists of Det. Paul Lucci and Sgt. Michael Marra, both of whom are certified remote pilots licensed through the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) under Part 107. This program is a vital component of the North Reading Police Department’s modern public safety strategy. The Drone Program provides aerial support for both planned and emergency operations, responding to a myriad of calls to include search and rescue, situational awareness, tactical deployment, event overwatch, and scene documentation. The unit is frequently deployed to support the operations of the North Reading Fire Department and other town agencies.

Sgt. Marra is also assigned to the Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (NEMLEC) Drone Unit, extending the support and capabilities of the program to NEMLEC member communities throughout the region. Currently, the department operates a DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Advance, which is equipped with thermal imaging and advanced flight technology. The program was founded in 2021 with equipment being purchased through a private grant and has thus far made a significant impact on the department’s ability to leverage advanced technology in emergency preparedness and service of community safety.
