NORTH READING — Police Chief Mark Zimmerman and Superintendent Patrick Daly report that the North Reading Police Department responded to a report of a bullet that was found in a parking lot adjacent to a school baseball field and Peabody Court Housing early this morning.

On Wednesday, April 16, at approximately 9:35 a.m., North Reading Police were notified of a bullet that was found in a parking lot adjacent to the baseball field and Peabody Court Housing, located near North Reading High School and the wastewater treatment plant on Park Street.

The parking lot is located between North Reading High School and Batchelder Elementary School.

North Reading Police located what appeared to be a .308 round, a commonly used round for hunting, in the parking lot. This was the only round found in the parking lot.

North Reading Police conducted a full sweep of the area and determined that there was no danger to the public.

North Reading Police would like to recognize the school department employee who found the bullet and reported it immediately to the department.

“We want to encourage residents who see something to say something,” said Chief Zimmerman. “I would like to highlight the great work between the department and the school district in ensuring everyone’s safety in an incident that was thankfully determined to pose no threat to the public. Our partnership with the school district is vital in all incidents, especially these.”

“We appreciate the prompt response of the North Reading Police Department and their communication and support in determining that there were no dangers to the public and all efforts to ensure that our schools and students were safe,” said Superintendent Daly. “We will continue to notify the school community when incidents such as this occur in order to provide as much information as possible about student safety.”
