It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Sergeant Dennis Maher (retired) who passed away this morning at the age of 72.
Sergeant Maher served honorably as a North Reading Police Officer beginning his career in 1969 and later retiring in 1993. During his career Dennis was a fine example of a selfless police officer, routinely donating his time and energy to the youth of our community. Dennis took pride in running our annual bike rodeos for local children and for arranging other child safety events, all of which helped bring the local community closer together with its police department. Prior to his promotion to Sergeant, Dennis was also assigned as the department’s Safety Officer, a position which focused on pedestrian and motor vehicle traffic safety, a job for which he helped set a high standard for moving forward for our department.
As a Police Officer, Dennis will always be remembered and appreciated for his calm and caring demeanor, for which he was able to gracefully use in order to help those in our community as well as those who had the good fortune to work alongside of him. As a Sergeant, Dennis’s demeanor was the hallmark of his exceptional leadership which enabled others, especially those he supervised to learn how best to effectively handle the many pressures of the job while maintaining a positive attitude.
“Sergeant Dennis Maher served the Town of North Reading with pride, distinction, and honor. He touched so many lives during his career and dedicated himself to keeping our community safe. Dennis will always be an honored member of our department. We’re forever grateful for his service” (NRPD Chief Michael P. Murphy)
