North Reading Police Department Hires New Officer
NORTH READING — Chief Michael P. Murphy is pleased to welcome a new officer to the North Reading Police Department.
Officer Joseph Aleo was officially sworn in during a small ceremony at the North Reading Town Hall at 2 p.m. today. He began his employment with the North Reading Police on September 11 and is the department’s first non-civil service hire since the Town of North Reading voted out civil service in October of 2016. Officer Aleo was selected as the top candidate out of more than 140 applicants.
The hiring process included an open competitive exam, reviewing applications, conducting in-depth background investigations, interview preparation and final interviews. The entire process is overseen by Chief Murphy and North Reading’s Human Resources Director, Robert Collins.
Officer Aleo graduated from the Massachusetts Municipal Police Training Council in 2016 and holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Westfield State University.
Prior to joining the North Reading Police Department, Officer Aleo served as a full-time police officer for the Nantucket Police Department.
“On behalf of the entire department, I am pleased to welcome Officer Aleo to North Reading,” Chief Murphy said. “I am confident that he will be a strong asset to our department and that he will accomplish great things throughout his career.”
Officer Aleo will complete a field training program for the next several weeks before being assigned a permanent shift.
