Press Release: District Attorney Ryan Hosts Summer Safety Event with Local Public Safety Officials at North Reading Cowabunga’s
NORTH READING – Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan, North Reading Police Chief Michael Murphy and North Reading Fire Chief William Warnock hosted a Summer Safety event at Cowabunga’s in North Reading as part of District Attorney Ryan’s annual efforts to educate parents, guardians and caretakers on ways to keep children safe during the summer months. With rising temperatures, the Summer Safety event was an opportunity to inform the public about risks to children associated with summer heat including window falls, drowning and the dangers of leaving children in hot cars.
Children in attendance were able to explore emergency vehicles including police cruisers and motorcycles, fire trucks and an armored vehicle provided by the Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council.
North Reading Police officers also performed car seat checks for parents and guardians.
The MDAO county wide summer safety initiative focuses on averting preventable deaths of children by informing parents, guardians and caretakers about ways to keep children safe during the summer. Three of these priorities include: reminding parents to actively supervise children around water, to never swim alone and to learn to recognize the signs of drowning; highlighting that preventing falls out of windows is as important as learning how to exit through one in an emergency; and raising awareness about how to keep children safe in and around cars, parents and caregivers should never leave children alone in a parked vehicle even when they are asleep or restrained and even if the windows are open.
